Yenyening Lakes and Qualandary Crossing

Former Beverley Shire President Fred Bremner put together a document on the environmental management of the Yenyening Lakes, Qualandary Crossing and the Avon River in Western Australia and its Controversies. In the forward, Fred describes the purpose of the document as:

“The management of the Avon River, Qualandary Crossing and the Yenyenning Lakes, is well recorded including in books by entitled.
Beverley and Beyond, Parker Print ISBN number 978-0 -646- 55338-2 Bulldozing the Avon, Parker Print ISBN number 978-0-646-93510-2.

Both the above books are available at the Shire of Beverley Library, the Beverley Community Resource Centre CRC and the Beverley District High School Library, where a factual history of Qualandary Crossing and the Bulldozing of the Avon River and its management are available to the reader.

The author has been requested to explain in detail the controversies resulting from.
1 The construction of the roadway known as Qualandary Crossing to permanently raise the water level of the Yenyenning Lakes.
2 The removal of debris from the bed of the Avon River known as the Avon River training Scheme.
3 the environmental management of the Avon from the time the centre of the River was cleared of trees and debris.” (The River Training Scheme)

The Yenyening Lakes are a large network of lakes that gather water from north of Kellerberrin and with a branch also draining to the south east. The lakes collects water from cleared lands across the majority of the wheatbelt in Western Australia, where clearing for agriculture has resulted in raised water tables and bringing ground salts to the surface. These salts turn good land bad and nothing of value can grow there, water becoming too salty for stock. Being on the receiving end Yenyenning Lakes are a hyper saline system rather like the human appendix, gathering all the debris from upstream. The lakes join the Avon River – which feeds the Swan River – near Qualandary Crossing.

The original copy of this document is available at the Beverley library located in the Beverley Community Resource Centre.
