Notice how the Yenyening Lakes feed into the Avon River at a confluence, but this water is not part of its usual flow. A control gate keeps the lakes’ hypersaline water back and is only opened when the Avon has a good flow. During high winter flows like the one shown in the video, fresher water sits above the denser saline layers in the lakes. When released, this fresher layer helps protect the Avon River from excessive salinity.
