Removing veldt grass and revegetation

24 June @ 8:30 AM - 10:30 AM

Our major project for 2026 is a pilot programme of removing veldt grass, by hand, over a 1ha area along the town fire break/ walk trail and down to the river. The perennial veldt grass smothers natives grasses and small endemic plants, grows tall wispy strands that carry fire fast, and significantly impact on the visual line of sight to the river zone.
We meet each fortnight, removing the tussocks, breaking them up so they can remain as mulch over summer, and plant Atriplex Semibaccata creeping saltbush that is endemic, fire resistant and grows in a mat that smothers invasive weeds. The berries are loved by reptiles and birds, and the plants create a lot of seeds that are easy to collect and spread to improve the coverage.
A couple of hours once a fortnight is all it takes and the job will get done.
Meet at the river end of John Street, down past the High School. Shoes and gloves and sturdy clothing are essential.
